Brief information about NNSU

The University of Nizhni Novgorod was inaugurated on January 17, 1916 as one of Russia's three People's universities in the emerging system of "free" universities. In 1918 it acquired the status of a state university. Today the University of Nizhni Novgorod (UNN) is one of the leading universities in Russia and a major education and research complex.

University of Nizhni Novgorod comprises:

• 27 faculties, including the Centre for Distance Education with its 9 faculties in a number of cities of the Nizhni Novgorod region and the Preparatory faculty - Centre
• 122 departments
• 6 research institutes: Physico-Technical Research Institute, Research Institute for Chemistry, Research Institute for Mechanics, Research Institute for Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics, Research Institute for Molecular Biology and Regional Ecology, Institute for Strategic Research.
• Fundamental library with more than 2 million volumes and 8 specialized reading halls.

There are 57 Ph.D.(Candidate of Sciences) programs and 24 post-doctoral (Doctor of Sciences) programs with more than 1000 students.

The teaching staff of the University includes:

• 279 doctors of sciences (D.Sc.) , professors;
• 784 candidates of sciences (Ph.D.), associate professors;
• 15 active and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS);
• 13 active and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS);
• 56 active and corresponding members of other Russian and international academies;
• 24 merited workers of science and engineering;
• 35 winners of State Prizes of the Russian Federation, of the Russian Federation Government's and President's Prizes;
• 37 winners of Nizhni Novgorod Prizes.

Diploma Specialist programs (5 years) are offered in 47 specialities. Bachelor's programs (4 years) are taught in 22 areas. There are 56 Master's programs (6 years), 10 programs of secondary professional education and shorter-term training programs for those already having higher or secondary professional education in respective areas.
