Ph.D. programs at UNN

The  training  of  experts of the highest level of education and scientific qualification through postgraduate programs leading to the degree of Candidate of Sciences (Ph.D. equivalent) is one of the  major priorities of scientific and technological policy of the State University Nizhni Novgorod.

The basic principles of training for Ph.D. students include:

·  individual approach to the organization of the educational process;
·  conformity of the subjects of dissertation papers to priority  areas of development of science, engineering and technology;
·  scientific and academic mobility of  Ph.D. students, including their participation in the programs of  international scientific  and  technological cooperation.    

Postgraduate (Ph.D.) programs are offered at the University of Nizhni Novgorod in 57 specialities in the fields of mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, biology, economy, philosophy, sociology, psychology, pedagogics, history, political science, philology, and law. At present, over 1000 postgraduate students are pursuing their Ph.D. programs at the university's different faculties and research institutes. Scientific supervision of their dissertational research is provided by more than 300 Professors.

At UNN, there are 22 dissertation councils that accept for their consideration candidate's and doctor's dissertations in 37 scientific specialities (fields of doctoral studies).

The degree of  Candidate of Sciences (Ph.D.) is conferred in recognition of mature scholarship and originality of thought. The program is designed to develop each student's proficiency in relevant  fields of specialization.

Each Ph.D. student is required to:

(1) complete coursework relevant to his or her chosen fields of study,
(2) pass comprehensive (Candidate's) examinations,
(3) present and defend a dissertation prospectus,
(4) write a dissertation and
(5) successfully defend the dissertation at the session of the relevant  dissertation council.
