Russian Studies Program
The program originated in 1993 when the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) signed Cooperation Agreement with the University of Nizhni Novgorod and appointed Harley Wagler, Professor of Slavic Languages, to be the Director of RSP. The first group of students from universities and colleges across the U.S. and Canada making part of CCCU arrived in Nizhni Novgorod in January 1994. Since then, every semester groups of CCCU students have been coming to Russia.
The program envisages 12 weeks of classes and extracurricular activities in Nizhni Novgorod, including the so-called service project (whereby students work as volunteers at schools, orphanages, restore churches, etc.). In addition to three seminar courses entitled History and Sociology of Religion in Russia; Russian Peoples, Cultures and Literature; and Russia in Transition, students receive instruction in the Russian language, choosing either 4 or 6 semester hours of language coursework. For those choosing 4 hours of Russian, a seminar course, International Relations and Business in Russia, is available. The group also visits Moscow and St. Petersburg where an extensive cultural program is offered, including museums, theatres and numerous historical and cultural landmarks in the two Russian capital cities.
During their stay in Nizhni Novgorod, half the time students live with Russian host families, where their Russian gets increasingly better, as does their understanding of everyday life in Russia.
In the course of the program, while participating in various cultural, social and sports events, American students closely interact and make friends with their Russian counterparts.
Short weekend visits to Vladimir, Suzdal and Kazan give the students an additional insight into the rich history of Russia and its cultural diversity.
Over 16 years, more than 600 students from the United States and Canada have taken part in the program.
